Children’s Laundry Tips

Children’s Laundry is unarguably the most difficult to deal with because they leave it where they drop it, and it’s your job to hunt it out. Make it their job, but make it fun for them and they are more inclined to stick with it. If only it were that simple eh? But what about a small basket in the bathroom or in their bedroom? It will take a few reminders at first, but once it clicks it really clicks and becomes part of their routine!

Wash & Dry Only £2.75 Per Kg

Sort their clothes out, and maybe even throw some out!

We’ve all been there, too many clothes to fit in the drawers and just feeling like you’re drowning in tiny t-shirts, bibs and odd socks! Try to dedicate an hour or two a month to sort through their cupboards and sort as you go; if it’s been washed twice and that baked bean stain is still there, it’s time for that tiny t-shirt to either become a duster or bin fodder! This tip for children’s laundry has saved me so much time since I implemented it in my own home. Anything that you don’t want to keep can be donated, sold on or thrown away if it’s no good anymore. Once you’ve decided to let go, get rid of it as soon as possible so that it’s not in your way.

Keeping clothes for your next child.

They have to go somewhere, bag them, label them and then get them up in the attic out of your way. Seeing bags waiting to go up will make you feel like there’s more to do than their actually is, and it inevitably gives the kids time to notice that Mammy is getting rid of their FAVOURITE t-shirt (that hasn’t fit them in a good 6 months!). It soon stacks up and you’ll have a nicely organised system for rotating the children’s laundry when the next one comes along!

Children’s Ironing Only £4.50 Per Kg

Ask for help!

At 2-3 years your little one can follow you around (they inevitably will anyway) and pick up any bits that you drop and then hunt out any dirties that still remain. Make it a game if you like; a kind of hide and seek for odd and smelly socks!

From 3 years on, you may be lucky enough to have a little folding enthusiast on your hands, don’t go passing them the bed sheets just yet though, start small; pairing socks, folding flannels etc. They may also be really into colours so what better way to teach them than to have them sort the laundry into darks and lights? You’re welcome!

Once they reach 6 or 7 years old they are ready for the big stuff… PUTTING AWAY! Yep, it’s almost time to retire in the sun, your kiddos are able to put their own laundry away! They might even move laundry from the washing machine to the tumble drier if you ask nicely enough.

At 10 years old, you have put in the effort to teach them the ways of the laundry and now they can be trusted to load the washing machine (with supervision), sort the detergent and even turn it on! You’ve made it, home free!

childrens laundry tips

With children’s laundry you need to keep on top of it!

Right, so you’ve put all of these children’s laundry tips to good use, you’re cool as a cucumber because you’ve got empty washing baskets and things are going well…

Then you go on holiday and come home with what feels like twice as many clothes than you took in the first place!

What now? How will you catch up?! Here’s where we come in, we will Wash, Dry and even Iron your clothes for you and return them on hangers, crease free or folded and ready to be put away. Sorry, we can’t do the putting away!

Shirt Ironing Tips

Shirt Ironing Made Simple

Shirt ironing is nobody’s favourite job, but it’s got to be done. Now we just need to get the message out to the world to make it less painful for all involved!

Shirts Ironed For £1.66 each

Tip 1 | Collar

Collar first. Lay the collar out flat on the ironing board and iron from the outside in so to speak. This stops those nasty little creases on the stitched edges.

Tip 2 | Shoulder

Shoulder panel next. On the back of the shirt, there is a panel across the top between the collar and the main body of the shirt (called a yoke technically!). Try this bit next and then you won’t need to deal with it again. Here, I tend to get the back of the shirt too as that’s another task completed on the shirt ironing checklist!

Tip 3 | Sleeves

Now lay the sleeves flat on the board, one at a time. The crease should form naturally on the top if you fold it from the stitched seam that runs under your arm whilst wearing it.

Iron both sides of the sleeve, making sure not to cause two creases. This is the part you have to be most methodical about.

Shirts Washed, Dried & Ironed Only £2.75 each

Tip 4 | Front

Now it’s just the front to go. Start with the side with the buttons on, iron it all, making sure to go between each button before moving onto the second side.

The most important step comes right at the very end! Hang it on a good hanger with the top button done up and leave it to hang until completely cool (10/15 minutes). This will help it hold its shape throughout the day!

If all this fails you and you still can’t get the hang of it, bring them down to CanDo Laundry Services! It’s only £1.66 per shirt!

OPL vs Hotel Laundry Services

True Cost of OPL vs. Hotel Laundry Services

How confident are you that you know the true cost of your on property laundry (OPL) compared to what a hotel laundry services costs? Could you calculate your costs down to the price per load, including every related expense? Are you sure you’re handling your laundry cheaper than a vendor could do?

Chances are, your calculation includes one or two categories of expenses such as labour and cleaning chemicals but overlooks other laundry-related costs that aren’t separately allocated for laundry in your budget. That means you’re underestimating your costs when comparing them to a laundry vendor.

With a holistic view of your property’s expenses in mind, let’s take a look at the true cost of OPL vs. what a hotel laundry service costs.

Laundry Costs Hidden in Plain Sight vs. Upfront Hotel Laundry Services Costs

When calculating the cost of on property laundry, it’s important to look beyond direct expenses and consider all of the elements involved, including things like the water, electricity and fuel required, salaries for staff, and the maintenance to keep your commercial laundry machines running smoothly.

You’ll also want to include as costs: the depreciation in value of your laundry equipment over time, the productivity lost when your machines are down for maintenance and the value of the square footage that your OPL is claiming.

Compare that to the inclusive pricing structure of a large-scale hotel laundry service. Instead of worrying about separate laundry-related bills and expenses, you’ll have a single, straightforward contract that covers your costs. You’ll be able to track over time exactly how much your laundry is costing – and how much your property is saving by outsourcing.

Fixed Cost vs. Pay as You Go

Your OPL is costing you money no matter what your occupancy levels are like. Linens still need to be laundered, staff need to be paid and utility costs will continue to fluctuate.

Your hotel laundry service cost, on the other hand, will depend on how much laundry is being processed, so you only end up paying for occupied rooms. Fewer guests mean fewer pounds of laundry and lower costs._

High Costs vs. High Tech

Most OPL operations have commercial laundry equipment that’s large enough to meet their needs but with large price tags to match. In addition to the cost of procuring the equipment, there are maintenance and repair costs, as well as the utility expenses of washing, drying and ironing each load.

A large-scale hotel laundry services takes high capacity to the high-tech next level with washers that can handle up to 5,000 pounds of laundry per hour using four times less water than a conventional machine. And the water that is used is recycled so that it can be used again.

Linen Losses vs. Linen Lifecycle Extension

Your property has invested in premium sheets, towels and robes, and you want to protect that investment as much as possible from damage and loss. While some linen loss is inevitable in hospitality, some is preventable and could be caused by aging commercial laundry equipment.

A laundry outsourcing provider has laundry equipment and practices in place to safeguard luxury linens from wear and tear, adding to the amount of time they can be in circulation.

Laundry Equipment vs. Lattes

An OPL is a large undertaking that requires enough space for the safe handling of linens, large equipment and personnel. Properties that have decided to partner with a laundry vendor and shut down their OPLs have been able to transform that square footage into retail space, conference rooms or even coffee shops.

Whether you continue to launder your linens yourself or opt for outsourcing, determining the true cost of OPL vs hotel laundry services cost is an important step toward running your hotel, resort or timeshare property as efficiently as possible.

Welsh Hotel Linen Inventory

6 Steps of Protecting Your Hotel Linen Inventory

Successfully protecting your Welsh hotel linen inventory doesn’t require armed guards or bank vault-level security systems, though you may be tempted.

Experts estimate that hotels can lose 15 to 20 percent of their precious linen inventory every year to premature loss or discards. It doesn’t take long for those losses to add up, meaning literally millions of dollars in waste across the entire industry.

Fortunately, there are best practices for protecting your hotel linen inventory, some of which you and your staff can put into place today.

Start by Investing in Durable Linens

Thanks to ongoing developments in fibers and fabrics, you no longer have to choose between luxury and durability when it comes to your hotel sheets and towels.

New product offerings offer the lushness your guests have come to expect as well as the ability to stand up to repeated laundry handling.

If you’ve made the savvy switch to a Welsh hospitality laundry vendor, you can enlist their help in selecting the best Welsh hotel linen supply for your property. They see a lot of linen every day – literally tons every year – and they’ll be most knowledgeable about what will meet your unique needs.

Have an Ample Supply of Cleaning Products for Staff and Guests

If you think your staff and guests wouldn’t dare use your fabulously fluffy towels to sop up spilled coffee or other messes, you’re wrong.

The most effective way to protect your guest linens from prematurely becoming cleaning rags is to provide enough alternatives to both staff and guests. Have a robust ragout program that constantly feeds your housekeeping staff, and consider reusable cleaning materials or sponges in guest rooms, especially if you have in-room kitchens or room service.

Maintain the Recommended Par Levels

If you’re squeaking by with just the right amount of pars, you may think you’re saving money on having to replenish your Welsh hotel linen supply. The truth is that you’re prematurely wearing out your current stock.

Luxury hotel bedding and quality towels need to rest between uses and cycles through commercial laundry equipment. If you don’t give them a break, you’re putting unnecessary strain on the fabric and shortening their lifecycle.

The recommended number of pars is four:

  • One in use in the guest room
  • One in climate-controlled storage to be used next
  • One dirty that just came out of a room
  • One in the laundry

Know When It’s Time to Take Linen Out of Circulation

Sheets and towels that are greying, fraying, irreparably stained or damaged should be pulled out of guest-facing circulation as soon as possible. That’s not just because guests will be less than impressed but because you’re continuing to pay to clean products that have reached the end of their lifecycle.

Make sure your housekeeping staff is trained to keep a watchful eye out for damage and that you have a process for removing stained or damaged materials.

Have a Linen Reclamation Program in Place

Not all stains will doom your sheets and towels to the cleaning rag pile, and if you work with the right laundry vendor, they’ll be able to remove some stains through a special wash to reclaim them.

Have staff isolate stained materials so they can be specially handled before they’re discarded.

Make a Plan to Start Today

Protecting your Welsh hotel linen inventory requires an investment in time, money and training resources, but the alternative – premature linen losses – is even more costly.

While some best practices require some lead time to implement, others can be put in place today. The upfront costs will save money in the long run, giving you more to invest in the guest experience.

Converting Commercial Laundry Services

Converting to a commercial laundry services and shutting down your on premise laundry or even switching suppliers can be one of the smartest decisions you make, and it can feel like one of the most complex.

There are logistics to consider, staff training to cover and a new commercial laundry relationship to initiate. It can feel overwhelming, but you and your staff will likely soon find that the trade-offs are worth it if you take the right steps.

To help ease the transition, here are some tips for how to convert to a hotel laundry service.

Make Sure You’re Clear on the Costs

One of the chief benefits to closing down your on premise laundry or even switching laundry suppliers is to save money. To make sure you’re saving all you can, be careful in comparing your current costs to the costs for a commercial laundry services.

That means you’ll need to accurately calculate your entire commercial laundry services cost, from water, to utilities, to labour and more. It isn’t unusual for organisations to underestimate how much their laundry or existing laundry supplier is truly costing, so make sure to include every laundry-related expense, no matter how small. It all adds up. For example, factor how much time you spend dealing with high volume rejects with a poor service provider.

Being clear on the costs also means knowing exactly what your new commercial laundry contract covers – and what it doesn’t. The right vendor will charge for clean items, not dirty, and will include services such as delivery. To avoid surprises down the road, gather as many details as you can about what’s included.

Play Up Your Green Highlights

Commercial laundry services are not only better technologically equipped to handle large quantities of linens than your on premise laundry, they do so using less water, gas and electricity. Energy efficient and water-saving commercial laundry equipment can process loads using up to four times less water, for instance.

By not having to do your own laundry, your property will also use less water and other resources, making you more eco-friendly overall. That’s a plus for the environment and for your marketing efforts. The shift to an eco-friendly commercial laundry services vendor may also give you an advantage in securing a green certification.

Get Your Staff Ready

While this is a big change for your whole team, the shift will impact some staff more than others, and everyone needs to be prepared. Training is the key to a smooth transition, and you’ll want to work with your new commercial laundry services to develop a training plan that works for your property.

Together, you’ll be able to determine what parts of the laundry process are changing and what’s staying the same.

It’s also important to treat training as an ongoing activity, not just a one-time session. As issues come up over time, many will be adequately addressed with training. It’s also part of a healthy relationship with your commercial laundry services vendor to keep the lines of communication open between both your management and front line staff.

Determine the Best Laundry Pickup and Delivery Times

Many commercial laundry services promise turnaround times of 72 hours or less from pickup to delivery. You and your housekeeping staff can work with your commercial laundry provider on the best times that make sense with the demands of your property and the needs of your guests.

Make the Call

Now that you have a better idea of how to convert to commercial laundry services, the only thing left to do is make the call that will save you money, time and natural resources. Call 01792813444.

Commercial Laundry Service in Wales

Wales’ Leading Commercial Laundry Service, and probably The Only National Award Winning Commercial Laundry  Service in Wales kept superstars feeling a little fresher with unbeatable fresh towels at Radio 1’s Biggest Weekend in Swansea.

Radio 1’s Biggest Weekend came to Swansea’s Singleton Park for what turned out to be one best festivals of 2018 during the 26th & 27th May.

As with all festivals, the combination of beautiful weather and superstars jumping around the stage resulted in a proactive action plan to provide 1400 towels. Radio 1’s festival partner was responsible for ensuring 1400 towels were not only onsite on time, yet beautifully cleaned for some pretty big names to use.

Radio 1’s festival partner faced a little dilemma as they sourced the towels direct from wholesaler. Those within the laundry and linen industry knows that brand new linen is not fit for use. It has to be cleaned to remove loose cotton, lint (linen fluff) and be prepared for use. No big deal when you have plenty of time to prepare and clean the items, right?

The wholesale order didn’t arrive to Singleton Park, Swansea until 12:30 pm. With superstars arriving Friday afternoon, a deadline of 5 pm was set to ensure towels were on-site and ready for stage warm-ups.

We are probably the Only National Award Winning Commercial Laundry Service in Wales, and was chosen as the commercial laundry partner of choice. A contract awarded to service 1400 towels. We were on call in the days leading up to the event, anticipating the delivery of these mystery towels that should have arrived Thursday.  Our flexibility of day and night communication provided peace of mind to Radio 1’s festival partner.

In record time, CanDo Laundry Services cleaned 1400 towels and returned them to site in just 3 hours. An outstanding result when left with no time spare to plan resources efficiently. We understood the importance of this event to the local community, and also appreciated our contribution. At the end of the day, our efforts meant that superstars could keep their brows looking fresh.

It’s fair to say many organisations don’t appreciate or even understand the importance of a reliable and consistent commercial laundry service partner. Only when things go wrong do we take a moment to step back and understand the importance of linen. For example, if it fails to arrive on time, or it arrives not fit for use, the ripple of effect on customers and end users could be catastrophic and crippling for many organisations.

Whilst we’re probably the Only National Award Winning Commercial Laundry Service in Wales, we service the entire U.K. If you’re reading this, and have a major event on the horizon or an organisation requiring a consistent and regular commercial laundry service or linen hire service. Give us a call, we’ll be able to help.

Football Kit Cleaning Tips

This process can be time consuming to follow these football kit cleaning tips. CanDo Laundry Services offers a full sports kit cleaning service from £10 + VAT for the whole football team kit.

1. Football Kit Cleaning Tips | Tackle It ASAP

It’s very tempting as a mum or dad to leave our child’s football kit in the bag until we’re ready to face laundry day. You’re pretty much guaranteed to find this whole process more difficult if you leave the kit for days. Tackle the kit as soon as you walk through the door.

First things first. Remove the loose mud. Use COLD water, never hot. Swill the kit in a utility sink to remove the lumps of sand and mud. Don’t have a utility sink? Put the kit on a clothes horse (or wall) outside and swill it down with your hosepipe.

2. Football Kit Cleaning Tips | Pre-soak

Your football kit should no longer have loose sand or mud on it after following tip 1.

Now, fill a large sink or bucket with COLD water (hot water will set the stain into the fabric) and put a cup of biological washing powder in the sink/bucket. (Biological washing powder is an enzyme based powder and breaks down natural stains far better than non-bio washing powder).

Secondly add a cup of oxidizing stain remover (such as vanish). Domestically I would use Lidl’s W5 own brand oxidizing stain remover (it does exactly the same thing as vanish).

Use gloves and and give the football kit a good rub in the tub! Ensure the powder has completely dissolved and the football kit is fully submersed. The longer you leave the kit soak the better. I’d recommend at least 2-4 hours, however leave it overnight for the best results.

Is the football kit really really dirty? Change the water and repeat the football kit cleaning tip 2.

3. Football Kit Cleaning Tips | Pre-wash

Ensure your machine has a pre-wash option and take advantage of it.

This allows the main wash to be as clean as possible. Use a cup of biological washing powder and half a cup of oxidizing stain remover in the pre-wash. Do the same for the main wash but use a full cup of oxidizing stain remover this time.

This gives plenty of opportunity for the oxygen bubbles to work their magic on the football kit.

4. Football Kit Cleaning Tips | Chlorine Bleach

Simple tip, don’t use it. You’re wasting your time as it will have little affect on grass and mud stains. Stick to the oxidizing stain remover.

5. Football Kit Cleaning Tips | Drying

To guarantee no shrinkage it’s best to air dry your football kit. However it is possible to tumble dry the football kit on a low heat. The best suggestion is to follow the manufacturers instructions.

Housekeeping Tips

10 Housekeeping Tips To Rocket Your Housekeeping Team

When crafting the perfect hotel experience for your guests, part of the plan has to include top notch housekeeping routines. Not only does this ensure that your hotel guests will enjoy a clean room, but it can also help make hotel furniture and fixtures last longer.

In the hospitality industry, creating the perfect experience for visitors and patrons is paramount. In this day and age, one or two bad reviews online can be the kiss of death for a business, and for better or for worse, business owners need to be aware of that possibility.

In order to help prevent the dreaded bad review, there are a number of things that business owners can do, but none more important, perhaps, than having a thorough and efficient cleaning and housekeeping plan in place.

Creating the most effective housekeeping checklist doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Check out this list of helpful housekeeping tips and tricks for hotels.

1 – Open Room Windows (if applicable)

This can take a few extra seconds of time in each room, but the difference it makes can be huge. Upon entering a room, before starting with cleaning anything, open up the windows and shades.

Getting some natural light and air flow in the room can be helpful. In addition to allowing the room to “breathe,” it also provides good ventilation (for when you’re working with cleaning chemicals) and lets you see the details of what needs to be cleaned better.

2 – Clear Out The Clutter

Many housekeepers report that starting with a “blank slate” gives them the easiest job of cleaning a room.

With that in mind, here’s what to do: empty the trash, remove linens, towels, bathmats, bottles of shampoo and other shower products, and anything else laying around.

This removes the temptation to simply wipe around items, or to pick them up and replace them after cleaning onto a wet surface—this can cause ring marks.

3 – Clean Bedroom Area First

For minimal bacterial transfer, start cleaning in the bedroom and then clean the bathroom area. This helps improve sanitation and overall cleanliness.

4 – Give Cleaning Products Time to Work

Save time scrubbing and let the products you use do the work for you. Spray the shower walls, toilet, and sink down, then clean things like the mirrors and windows while they work.

You’ll find that when you go back and clean everything else, you’ll need to use less elbow grease.

5 – Always Sweep or Vacuum Before Mopping

Mopping should be your last task during the cleaning process. Vacuuming or sweeping ensures that you get the dust and debris off the floor before getting it wet.

Things like wet hair, for instance, can be extremely difficult to clean up off floors, and sweeping or vacuuming can help prevent that headache.

6 – Use a Toothbrush to get into Nooks and Crannies

For places like the screws on the bottom of a toilet, nothing works better or faster than a toothbrush.

7 – Keep Everything For Cleaning in a Cart

One thing that can waste a lot of time, all the time, is having to hunt down every product required for cleaning a hotel room. Housekeepers at their most efficient keep everything they need on a handy cart so that it can be brought from room to room very easily.

This is a basic tip, but it’s surprising how many hotels don’t do this!

8 – Be Sure to Dust Everything

Dusting is a quick and easy job, but it’s very easy to forget certain surfaces in hotel rooms. For instance, it’s easy to forget to dust off exposed light bulbs, which can gather dust quickly and look much dirtier than they are.

You should also shake out the curtains every few days to knock the dust off of them before vacuuming the floors.

9 – Use Mattress Protectors to Extend Lifespan

More of a design idea than a true housekeeping tip, one thing that can help save your hotel a lot of money is to use mattress protectors.

These can protect your mattresses from not only liquids and stains, but also dust mites and allergens.  Pillow protectors can offer similar benefits.

10 – Vacuum the Furniture

Finally, vacuuming the furniture using an attachment to remove dust and dirt can make the room much cleaner. Neglected, these areas can quickly become very dingy and hotel guests will be sure to notice.

And, what’s worse, if guests feel one part of their room hasn’t been adequately cleaned, they may assume the rest of the room isn’t getting enough attention, either. It’s not a good situation, but thankfully, it’s one that is very easily avoided.

When you’re crafting a cleaning and housekeeping checklist for your hotel, be sure to keep these tips in mind. This will help ensure that all hotel guests enjoy their stay and feel comfortable that the rooms in your hotel are properly cared for.
