CanDo Laundry Services at the TSA Spring Conference 2024

This April, CanDo Laundry Services actively participated in the TSA Spring Conference, which took place on 15-16 April at the Hilton St. George’s Park in Burton Upon Trent. The TSA conference assembled 90% of the industry leaders, presenting a crucial platform for dialogue, learning, and networking. Daniel Shepherd, our Managing Director, alongside Craig Penfold, our Commercial Director, represented CanDo Laundry Services. Their attendance ensured we were at the forefront of discussions that tackled a range of contemporary issues within the laundry sector.

A Gathering of Industry Leaders

The TSA Spring conference provided a unique forum for those in the laundry services industry to reconnect and exchange ideas after a challenging period. With topics spanning from diversity and inclusion to the latest in hygiene and sustainability, the event catered to a broad spectrum of interests. It was an educational and enriching experience, highlighted by in-depth discussions and the exchange of best practices among the industry’s top minds. The overwhelming turnout of industry participants underscored the conference’s relevance, establishing it as an essential event for networking and growth in our field.

Sustainability: The Industry’s Commitment to the Environment

Sustainability was a dominant theme at this year’s conference. The TSA’s focus was on educating attendees about the lifecycle of textiles, emphasizing the importance of making them last longer to minimize environmental impact. This involves a comprehensive understanding of what goes into manufacturing textiles—including the considerable energy required—and how each phase of a textile’s life contributes to sustainability. The discussion also highlighted the detrimental impact of missing or damaged linen on sustainability efforts, reinforcing the need for better management practices in our operations.

Pasha the Pillowcase: A Mascot for Sustainability

A key feature of the sustainability discussions was the discussion of TSA’s mascot for sustainability- “Pasha the Pillowcase,” a campaign aimed at addressing the 62% of hospitality textiles that go missing, are stolen, or simply forgotten. This initiative seeks to educate the market on the critical importance of stock rotation and utilisation as integral to sustainability. It serves as a reminder of our responsibility towards more sustainable practices, emphasising how proper textile management can significantly reduce environmental footprints.

Utilities and Industry Innovations: Shaping the Future

The move toward integrating sustainable energy sources such as heat pumps and solar energy was a significant point of discussion highlighted by the TSA. The industry is also looking towards future technologies like mechanical vapour recompression, which is still in development but expected to make a considerable impact in the coming years. These innovations are part of a broader industry goal to reduce carbon footprints and enhance energy efficiency across all operations.

Research Insights: Implications for Healthcare and Hygiene

The TSA presented compelling new research showing that domestic washing machines often harbor bacteria, which can pose serious health risks, particularly in healthcare settings. This finding is critical for the NHS, which currently encourages healthcare workers to launder uniforms at home. The research challenges the effectiveness of home laundering in killing bacteria, suggesting a potential risk of contamination and the spread of infections. This underscores the essential role of professional laundry services in ensuring higher standards of hygiene and safety.

TSA and Government Engagement: Elevating Industry Priorities

A significant objective of the conference was to strengthen the laundry industry’s interaction with government bodies. The TSA aims to raise awareness among policymakers about the pivotal role of laundry services in critical sectors, highlighting its necessity akin to utilities like gas, water, and electricity. By engaging more actively with MPs and raising pertinent questions in parliament, the industry can secure a more prominent place in policy discussions, ensuring that its needs and challenges are adequately addressed.

Guest Speaker Insights: John Sergeant’s Contributions

John Sergeant, as the headline speaker, brought a refreshing perspective to the conference. His discussions about his career in broadcast journalism added a personal touch, reminding attendees of the importance of storytelling and public engagement. His presence underscored the conference’s diverse agenda, which not only focused on technical and business aspects but also on the broader social and cultural implications of our work.

The TSA Spring Conference 2024 was a landmark event for CanDo Laundry Services, filled with invaluable insights and opportunities for strategic development. Balancing Pet-Friendliness and Linen Care: A Guide for Pet-Friendly Hotels

In recent years, the hospitality industry has witnessed a significant shift towards pet-friendly accommodations. As more travellers seek to bring their furry companions along on their adventures, hotels have responded by opening their doors to pets. However, this trend raises a pertinent question: How can hotels maintain their commitment to cleanliness and hygiene while accommodating guests with pets? In this blog post, we explore strategies for hotels to be pet-friendly while also ensuring the proper care of their linen.

Understanding the Challenge:

The integration of pet-friendly policies presents hotels with unique challenges, particularly concerning the cleanliness and maintenance of their linen. Pets, no matter how well-behaved, can leave behind fur, dander, and occasionally, stains. Moreover, the presence of pets increases the likelihood of allergens and odours, which can impact the overall guest experience. However, with careful planning and implementation of appropriate measures, hotels can successfully navigate these challenges without compromising on cleanliness or guest satisfaction.

1. Invest in High-Quality Linen

One of the first steps hotels can take is to invest in high-quality linen that are easy to clean and maintain which can significantly reduce the impact of pet-related messes. Industrial laundry services such as CanDo Laundry Services naturally offer these high-quality linens, ensuring that each item undergoes a rigorous cleaning process. By partnering with such providers, hotels can rest assured that their linen not only meets the highest standards of durability but also undergoes thorough cleaning to maintain cleanliness, even in pet-friendly environments. In-addition, by utilising protective covers, such as blankets, a barrier can be created between pets and the hotel’s linen, preventing stains and minimising the accumulation of pet hair and dander. Furthermore, opting for double pillowcases rather than single ones can provide an extra layer of protection for pillows, reducing the likelihood of them becoming soiled or damaged. These simple yet effective strategies can help hotels prolong the lifespan of their linen while ensuring a comfortable and hygienic experience for all guests.

2. Implement Strict Cleaning Protocols

Implementing strict cleaning protocols is crucial in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, especially in pet-friendly accommodations. Housekeeping staff should follow comprehensive procedures designed to address pet-related challenges. This includes using specialised cleaning agents to neutralise odors and remove stains without damaging the linen. Thorough vacuuming and surface sanitisation are essential, with extra attention given to areas frequented by pets. Periodic deep-cleaning procedures, such as steam cleaning, should be conducted to tackle lingering odors and stains. Linens should be laundered at high temperatures using specialized detergents to ensure optimal cleanliness. Regular inspections and prompt replacement of damaged linens are also important.  By partnering with an industrial laundry provider like CanDo Laundry Services, hotels can streamline operations, reduce the burden on the housekeeping team, and guarantee consistent cleanliness throughout the establishment.

3. Offer Pet-Specific Amenities

Hotels can further enhance the pet-friendly experience by providing additional amenities tailored specifically for pets. One such amenity is offering blankets or throws that guests can use to cover furniture or bedding, providing a designated space for their pets to lounge while reducing the amount of hair and dirt that comes into contact with the hotel’s linen. These blankets can be easily washed or replaced between guest stays, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene without compromising on comfort for pet-owning guests. By proactively providing solutions to minimise pet-related messes, hotels can demonstrate their commitment to both pet-friendliness and cleanliness, enhancing the overall guest experience for all.

4. Communicate Expectations Clearly

Clear communication is key to managing guest expectations and minimising misunderstandings. Hotels should clearly outline their pet policies, including any additional fees or restrictions, at the time of booking and upon check-in. Guests should be informed of their responsibility to maintain the cleanliness of the room and respect the hotel’s guidelines regarding pet behaviour. By setting clear expectations from the outset, hotels can foster a positive experience for both pet-owning guests and staff.

5.  Partnering with a Professional Laundry Service

In the realm of maintaining cleanliness in pet-friendly accommodations, partnering with professional industrial laundry services can be a game-changer. Companies like CanDo Laundry Services specialise in the thorough cleaning and sanitation of various hotel linens, including pillows, duvets, blankets, and even curtains. Their expertise in handling bulk laundry ensures that these items are effectively rid of pet hair, stains, and odours, restoring them to a fresh and hygienic state. For hotels catering to pet-friendly rooms, it’s especially advisable to establish a regular schedule for washing these items, given the increased likelihood of exposure to pet-related messes. By entrusting the laundering of such linens to a reputable service provider like CanDo, hotels can uphold their commitment to cleanliness and guest satisfaction, while also easing the burden on their in-house housekeeping staff.

Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in pet-friendly accommodations is essential for ensuring a pleasant guest experience. By implementing strategies such as investing in high-quality linen, implementing strict cleaning protocols, offering pet-specific amenities, and partnering with professional laundry services, hotels can effectively balance pet-friendliness with cleanliness standards. By choosing to work with trusted industrial laundry providers like CanDo Laundry Services, hotels can further enhance their cleanliness efforts and alleviate the workload on their housekeeping teams.
